| A
detailed check of your baby's health
The wellbeing scan aims to determine the growth
and health of the baby by estimating its weight; watching
its movements; checking the placenta and the amount of fluid around
it; and by assessing the blood flow to the placenta and baby with
colour Doppler ultrasound.
Doppler ultrasound looks at blood flow and direction
and can be used to see how well blood is flowing from the placenta,
through the umbilical cord, to the baby. The pattern of flow can
be recorded and the amount of resistance in each vessel estimated
- this is a sensitive marker of how well the placenta is performing
and how good the blood supply to the baby is.
