Private 20 week Anomaly scan at Beard Mill Clinic

This is a detailed anomaly scan of the baby, carried out at 18 to 23 weeks, during which each part of the baby's body is examined. At this stage all the major organs have developed and can be readily visualised by ultrasound. This provides a wonderful opportunity to see your baby, perhaps with a 3D scan if the baby is well positioned, and to check he or she is developing correctly. At Beard Mill Clinic we give you time - at least 45 minutes - so you can rest assured, your anomaly scan will be conducted thoroughly and with time to explain everything to you.

Continued, professional support from Dr Victoria Heath for you and your baby

In most cases the 20 week anomaly scan provides parents with reassurance that their baby seems to be developing normally. But occasionally a major abnormality will be detected and further investigations may be required. In this instance Dr Victoria Heath will arrange a referral directly back to your NHS consultant or GP and will liaise with them to ensure the continuity of your family's care. Beard Mill would also be delighted to continue to answer any questions you may have, over the phone as your pregnancy progresses.

The 20 week anomaly scan to detect Down's syndrome

This comprehensive 20 week ultrasound pregnancy scan provides an opportunity to check for "markers" which might indicate a major chromosomal abnormality, such as Down's syndrome. At Beard Mill Clinic, the most sensitive second trimester markers - the presence of nuchal oedema, short long bones and echogenic (bright) bowel, or the absence of the fetal nasal bone - are specifically looked for during the anomaly scan.

Cervical length measurement

A mother who is at high risk of a premature delivery may also consider cervical length assessment at the time of her 20 week anomaly scan. From the measurement of the length of the neck of the womb, the cervix, it may be possible to identify those women who are at high risk of having a very premature delivery. This scan is particularly important for women with a multiple pregnancy, those who have had a very premature delivery before or who have had surgery on their cervix. It is not performed routinely at Beard Mill Clinic but is always available to mothers who might be concerned.
